Helmut has been involved in the engineering of Bulk Handling Machines for coal, iron ore, bauxite, salt and other materials since the late 1980’s.

Engineering Design

  • Detailed engineering and drafting activities from conception through to procurement, manufacture, assembly and commissioning, for cranes stackers reclaimers and ship loaders. Examples include Gladstone 6000tph coal ship loader, Sydney CBD building maintenance unit on floor 42 of Angel Place Auditorium, unique development of 2000 tph Salt Reclaimer at Onslow WA.
  • Roles as team member and as team leader
  • Mechanical and structural design and analysis for machines and cranes
  • Supervisor of design development of structural, mechanical and safety automation systems. Took a leading role in the implementation of machine safety control systems in Australia in the mid 2000’s.

Design Compliance

  • Design audits to AS1418 (Cranes), and to AS4324.1 (Machines), for example 6000 tph Bauxite ship loader, Weipa.
  • Inspection and certification for continued safe use, for example Mt Isa Ladel Cranes
  • Technical supervision on site for heavy refurbishment activities, such as for slew bearing and bucket wheel change outs in the Pilbara
  • Certification of machine design and installation, including for commissioning of safety control systems.
  • Participated on AS4324.1 sub committee to revise that standard for its 2017 issue.

Design Process Research

  • PhD research on mitigating the effects of errors on the outcome of design processes, leading to significant development on our company’s design and design risk management methods
  • Applied decision making skills from a time prior to engineering working as a commercial pilot, and from university study of psychology
  • Developed a fatigue design method for his undergraduate thesis that is now included in AS1210 Design of pressure vessels.

Engineering Leadership and Management

  • Was the Principal Engineer and Project Director on numerous machine design projects, and for design and supply projects in Australia, South Africa, India and Colombia
  • Developed and proved effective techniques for running design and delivery projects with multiple teams distributed across numerous global locations and cultures. These techniques allow design owners to receive cost effective and fit for purpose engineering deliverables despite disparate locations and cultures.
